SAN FRANCISCO — No new drug cases appeared this morning in San Francisco Superior Court, two days after revelations of alleged mishandling of drug evidence in the police department's crime lab.

Deborah Madden, 60, of San Mateo, a recently retired lab supervisor who was a civilian employee, is the subject of an investigation by the Police Department into accusations she took small amounts of cocaine from evidence containers.

WASHINGTON, March 9 (Reuters) - About 16 percent of Americans between the ages of 14 and 49 are infected with genital herpes, making it one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases, U.S. health officials said on Tuesday.

Actor Corey Haim, 38, was pronounced dead at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, Calif., Wednesday morning after an apparent overdose, police said.
Police learned of the death, which occurred between 4 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, when staff at the hospital called authorities, said Sgt. Frank Albarren of the Los Angeles Police Department's North Hollywood Station.
